Visit to Mount Vesuvius

Mount Vesuvius is not just a volcano, it is a presence that shapes the landscape, the history, and the identity of the Bay of Naples.
Rising between the sea and the city, visible from every corner of the coast, Vesuvius is where the power of nature meets the memory of humanity.

Here you don’t simply visit a mountain: you walk toward the crater of one of the world’s most famous volcanoes, following trails of lava, ash, and volcanic rock, with breathtaking views over Naples, Capri, and the entire coastline. Every step tells a story of destruction and rebirth, fear and wonder.

Vesuvius is a perfect destination for travelers seeking nature, emotion, and spectacular scenery, and also for those who want to better understand the dramatic history of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

To the question, “Why choose Vesuvius ?”

I will try to answer by trying to describe Vesuvius to you. What does Vesuvius have?

Volcano of legend: Vesuvius is one of the most famous and powerful volcanoes in the world.

Epic landscapes: Its slopes offer breathtaking views over the Bay of Naples and the surrounding coastline.

Sleeping giant: Quiet today, yet still active, the volcano reminds visitors of nature’s incredible force.

Unique experience: Walking up to the crater is a rare opportunity to stand on the edge of a living volcano.

Vast panorama: From the summit, the entire Gulf of Naples unfolds beneath your eyes.

Icon of history: Vesuvius shaped the fate of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and the entire region.

Untamed nature: The raw volcanic landscape shows the wild and powerful side of the Earth.

Scenic trails: Hiking paths wind through lava fields and viewpoints with unforgettable scenery.

When to visit the Vesuvius

Mount Vesuvius can be visited all year round, but spring and autumn are the best seasons to enjoy it fully.
Here’s why:

  • Ideal temperatures make the walk up to the crater comfortable and enjoyable.
  • Clearer air offers stunning views over the Bay of Naples..
  • Safer trails with less heat and dust.
  • A more atmospheric experience, far from the summer crowds..

In summer the volcano is very popular and the heat can make the climb more demanding, while winter days may bring wind or clouds that limit visibility.

How to reach teh Vesuvius

Mount Vesuvius is easy to reach thanks to its location between Naples, Pompeii, and Herculaneum.

  • If you’re traveling by car, take the A3 Naples–Salerno motorway and exit at Ercolano or Torre del Greco, then follow the signs to the Vesuvius National Park. This option is ideal for travelers who want full flexibility.
  • The most convenient solution is the Circumvesuviana train, which connects Naples and Sorrento with Ercolano Scavi and Pompei Scavi stations. From both, official buses and shuttles run directly to the entrance of the volcano.
  • During the high season, combined train + Vesuvius bus tickets are also available, offering a smooth and simple way to reach the crater.
