Salerno adventures

Welcome, Rider Explorers!
I'm thrilled to see you're eager to embark on an exploration of Salerno!
For you, I have a very special proposal...
Everything revolves around a place that encompasses the essence of this city, making it perfect for a day filled
with adventure, culture, sustainability, and love for nature: Arechi Castle.

The trip starts with...
This medieval fortress, perched 300 meters above sea level, overlooks the city and the Gulf of Salerno. With Byzantine origins, possibly even Roman, the castle underwent multiple renovations until it took on its current appearance. Its name and structure are thanks to Lombard Duke Arechi II, who made it his residence in the 8th century and transformed it into a true stronghold.
The castle, which has been well-preserved thanks to numerous restorations, is surrounded by a large park and is open for visits from Tuesday to Sunday. Inside, you’ll find a small medieval museum displaying ancient weapons, ceramics, coins, and artifacts unearthed during excavations.
Now that you’ve had a glimpse of how amazing this place is, it’s time to find out how it will become the highlight of your day, though not the only one! For nature lovers, the most scenic and eco-friendly way to reach Salerno is by sea.
Upon arriving at Salerno’s port, you’ll already be in the heart of the city. Take a moment to admire the stunning Lungomare Trieste, one of Europe’s most beautiful seafronts, but don’t linger too long, you’re just getting started!
Leave the sea behind and head right towards "Garibaldi Tribunale", where you’ll find the bus stop for line 019. This bus will take you to Strada Per Croce - Palina 8. From there, it’s just a 5-minute walk before the castle appears before your eyes.
The visit won’t take too much time, as the castle isn’t enormous, but that works in your favor, your adventure is far from over!

Your journey continues...
Towards La Bastiglia, an imposing watchtower guarding the northern slope. From here, follow an easy path that will lead you to the road to Croce di Cava.
Now, no more climbing! After a short stop at Sant’Elena Church, head back to the pine forest, the perfect place for a well-deserved lunch break.
Important tip for expert explorers: Make sure to bring enough water and a delicious packed meal to enjoy surrounded by birdsong and the rustling of the trees.
From here, you’ll head back to the city via the panoramic trail that connects Arechi Castle to Salerno’s historic center: the famous "Sentiero del Principe".
This historic hiking trail is a 6.5 km loop with a 350-meter elevation change, making it an easy to moderate hike, so get ready and let’s go!

It's time to get off!
The route unfolds through a lush pine forest, filling your lungs with fresh air. Along the way, there are several must-see spots:
The ruins of an ancient chapel at Croce di Sardone, offering a breathtaking panoramic view over Salerno and its gulf.
The medieval village of Canalone, a well-preserved historic gem with stone houses and narrow alleys.
The San Lorenzo Stairway, leading you back into Salerno’s historic center.
Once in the city, continue your journey through history along Via Torquato Tasso and Via dei Canali, where you’ll reach: The Archaeological Complex of San Pietro a Corte, once the residence of Prince Arechi, and the only remaining example of Lombard palace architecture.
The Cathedral of Salerno, a stunning Romanesque masterpiece, an absolute must-see before leaving the city!
To wrap up this incredible adventure, treat yourself to a refreshing artisanal gelato, a delicious reward before heading back to the port.
As you watch Salerno fade into the horizon, you’ll realize you’ve left a little piece of yourself here, and rest assured, this enchanting city has left a piece of its magic in you, too!
