Vieste on the Gargano promontory, with the sea and its whitewashed houses
Gargano · Puglia

Viestethe pearl of the Gargano

Pizzomunno, old town, Swabian castle, sea caves

The town

A white village perched above the sea

Vieste is one of the most loved destinations in Puglia: it sits on the Gargano promontory, facing transparent water, with the old village clinging to the rock. The whitewashed houses, the flowering arches and the narrow alleys create an atmosphere you recognise at once.

All around, golden beaches and white cliffs draw a unique landscape, where history and nature stand side by side. Walking the centre you catch the smell of the sea and you understand it is still a real place, not a postcard.

What to see in Vieste

The Pizzomunno, the caves and the flavours of the Gargano

The beaches of Vieste are among the finest in Puglia: from the long sandy stretch of Pizzomunno, dominated by the white sea stack that is the town’s symbol, to hidden coves reachable only by boat. The sea caves, carved by wind and water, are a spectacle to explore from the sea.

From above, the lighthouse and the Swabian castle offer panoramas that take in the whole coast. And then the food: fresh fish, handmade orecchiette and tiella of rice, potatoes and mussels, to be eaten in the restaurants of the old town or along the seafront, with a glass of Apulian wine.

An ideal base

The port for the Tremiti Islands

Every morning the connection to the Tremiti Islands leaves Vieste, the only archipelago in the middle Adriatic: you sail at 08:30 and come back in the afternoon. It is the trip that completes a Gargano holiday.

Getting there

How to reach Vieste

The coast and the village of Vieste

Vieste is easy to reach, and the journey is part of the experience. By car you arrive along the Gargano coastal road (SS89) or on the expressway from Foggia: the route crosses olive groves, pine woods and views over the sea, but in summer the road is slow and busy, and parking near the beaches is scarce.

Vieste has no railway station: if you arrive by train you get off at Foggia or San Severo and continue by coach, with more frequent services in summer. It does, however, involve changes and careful planning around the timetables.

And then there is the sea. From the harbour of Vieste the operator NLG sails to the Tremiti Islands: departure at 08:30, six days a week, with the return in the afternoon. It is the trip worth the journey, with the archipelago seen from the water.

By car

  • Gargano coastal road (SS89) or the expressway from Foggia.
  • The Gargano coast road is winding and slow, especially in summer.

Heavy traffic in summer and limited parking near the centre.

By train and bus

  • Vieste has no station: get off at Foggia or San Severo and continue by coach.
  • The trip involves changes and long waits, with few runs out of season.

Train plus bus takes hours — for the Tremiti, the ferry leaves straight from Vieste’s harbour.

A proper Rider picks the fastest option — and the most beautiful one too.

In Vieste the harbour is in town: from the quay to the Pizzomunno is a short walk.

How long to stay

Is one day enough to visit Vieste?

To see it, yes: the old village in the morning, the Pizzomunno beach and the lighthouse at sunset.

But the sea of Vieste is there to be explored: the caves and coves show themselves only by boat.

Two days bring in the Swabian castle, the beaches around and a tiella dinner in the centre.

Three days add the Tremiti: departure at 08:30 and back in the afternoon.
