How to get to Torre Annunziata
Torre Annunziata sits strategically between Naples, Pompeii and Herculaneum, and it is quick to reach. By car you leave the A3 Naples–Salerno motorway at the dedicated exit: twenty to twenty-five minutes from Naples, longer at peak times.
The alternative is the train: the town is served both by the Circumvesuviana (Naples–Sorrento line) and by regional trains on the Naples–Salerno line, with frequent services and around twenty minutes from the city. There are also buses from Naples and the neighbouring towns.
By sea, the port of Torre Annunziata is above all a departure call: sailings leave from here for the gulf, the Sorrento peninsula and the islands, with frequencies that change through the year. Times and fares are the part to check before you travel.
By car
- A3 Naples–Salerno motorway, Torre Annunziata exit: twenty to twenty-five minutes from Naples.
- At rush hour the A3 often grinds to a halt between Naples and the excavations.
At peak times the traffic slows things down considerably.
By train or bus
- Circumvesuviana and regional trains: around twenty minutes from Naples, with frequent services.
- The Oplontis excavations are a few minutes on foot from the station.
At the busiest hours the trains run full.

Is one day enough to visit Torre Annunziata?
Yes, if you put Oplontis at the centre. The Villa of Poppaea takes an hour and a half, the centre and the port an afternoon: in between, a seafood lunch or a plate of pasta where pasta has been made for generations.
But the town is at its best as a base. It costs less than Naples or Sorrento, and the train puts it twenty minutes from the city, two stops from Pompeii and a little more from Herculaneum.
With two or three days the sea and the volcano come into play: the morning crossing to the peninsula or the islands, the trails of Vesuvius National Park and the beaches below the crater.
If you come for the sea, you will find dark-sand beaches and equipped lidos: less dramatic than the island coves, but convenient and a short walk from the centre.
