Holiday in Baia

Baia is not just a seaside village: it’s a place where nature, myth, and archaeology come together.

Located in the town of Bacoli, just a few kilometers from Naples, it was once considered the “little Rome on the sea,” chosen by emperors and patricians as a luxurious retreat thanks to its thermal waters and mild climate.

Today Baia is world-famous for its Underwater Archaeological Park, one of the most fascinating sites in the world, where mosaics, streets, and Roman villas lie submerged due to the volcanic phenomenon of bradyseism. Above the water, the imposing Aragonese Castle of Baia overlooks the gulf, offering breathtaking views and housing the Archaeological Museum of the Phlegraean Fields.

A stroll through Baia is a journey back in time: from the allure of myth (legend has it that Ulysses met the sorceress Circe here) to the beauty of its sea and beaches. It’s the perfect destination for those seeking culture, relaxation, and a direct connection with nature, nestled between the Phlegraean Fields and the Gulf of Pozzuoli.

To the question “why choose Baia ?”

I will try to answer by trying to describe Baia to you.

When to Visit Baia

There is no single perfect time to visit Baia: each season reveals a different charm. However, spring and early autumn are the most recommended.

Here's why:

  • Mild climate: pleasant days to explore the archaeological sites and enjoy the sea.
  • Peaceful atmosphere: far from the summer crowds, visits are more relaxed.
  • Unique experiences: the sea is warm enough to dive and explore the submerged park.
  • Cultural events: festivals, guided tours, and historical reenactments enrich the stay.

Those seeking lively beaches and summer nightlife will prefer July and August, when Bacoli fills with energy and seaside tourism brings the evenings to life.

How to reach Baia

Getting to Baia is simple and quick: it’s located just about 20 kilometers from Naples, right at the gateway to the fascinating Phlegraean Fields.

  • If you’re traveling by car, you can take the Naples ring road (Tangenziale) and exit at Arco Felice or Bacoli. In around 30 to 40 minutes you’ll be at your destination. Driving gives you full freedom to explore the area and nearby attractions, but in summer traffic can be heavy and parking near the coast rather limited.

  • A convenient alternative is the Cumana railway, which connects Naples to Torregaveta. From there, a short bus or taxi ride takes you to Baia in just a few minutes. It’s an affordable and frequent solution, ideal for those who prefer not to drive, though it does require a transfer and slightly longer travel times.

  • For those who want a direct option, there are also buses: ANM and CTP lines run from Naples to Bacoli and Baia. It’s an inexpensive way to travel straight into town, although journey times depend heavily on traffic conditions.

  • Finally, in the summer months, the most scenic way to arrive is by sea.
Several ferry operators – including Capitan Morgan – connect Baia with Naples, Pozzuoli, Procida, and Ischia. Arriving by boat is a spectacular experience, with the Aragonese Castle rising above the bay as you approach. The only drawback is that this service is seasonal and can be affected by rough seas.
