Palinuro

Sea, History, Fun and Nature

Holiday in Palinuro
Palinuro is one of the jewels of Cilento, a place where the sea blends with legend.
Its name comes from the famous helmsman of Virgil’s Aeneid, and even today this mythic aura lingers along its rugged coastline, its sea caves, and its crystal-clear waters, awarded many times with the Blue Flag.
The town is famous for its spectacular promontory jutting out into the Tyrrhenian Sea like a stone guardian, offering breathtaking views. Hidden coves only reachable by boat, golden sandy beaches framed by Mediterranean vegetation, and vibrant seabeds make it a paradise for diving and snorkeling lovers.
Life in Palinuro flows gently between relaxing beach days, outdoor adventures, and lively evenings by the marina, with restaurants, bars, and seaside walks. Its location also makes it a perfect base to explore cultural treasures like the archaeological sites of Velia and Paestum.

When to Visit Palinuro
Palinuro is enchanting year-round, but the best seasons to visit are spring and early autumn.
- Perfect weather: warm days without the summer heat, ideal for hiking and swimming.
- Quieter beaches: far less crowded than in July and August.
- Colors of nature: blooming landscapes in spring and golden sunsets in autumn.
- Local events: traditional festivals and food fairs enrich your stay.
For those who prefer a lively atmosphere, July and August are the busiest months, when the town is full of visitors and nightlife by the sea.
How to reach Palinuro
Reaching Palinuro is both simple and enjoyable: the town is well connected to the rest of Cilento and can be reached in several different ways.
- If you’re traveling by car from Salerno, take the A2 motorway to Battipaglia, then continue along the SS18 and exit at Poderia, following the signs to Palinuro. In just over two hours you’ll arrive at your destination. Driving is the most convenient choice for those who love freedom and flexibility, with the chance to explore nearby villages along the way. Just keep in mind that in the summer months traffic can be heavy and parking spaces limited.
- A very practical alternative is the train. The nearest station is Pisciotta-Palinuro, on the Naples–Reggio Calabria line. From there, buses and shuttles take you to the town and its marina in about 15 minutes. This is the ideal option for travelers coming from Naples or Rome, though it does require a transfer.
- For a more budget-friendly option, there are buses. Services operated by Busitalia and private companies connect Palinuro with Salerno, Naples, and other towns, especially during the summer. It’s an accessible and direct solution, though inevitably slower and subject to road traffic.
- Finally, in the summer months, there’s the most scenic way to arrive: by sea.
Thanks to the Metrò del Mare, Palinuro is linked to Salerno, Amalfi, Capri, and other coastal destinations. Approaching by boat is an unforgettable experience: the view opens onto caves, cliffs, and hidden beaches that suddenly appear along the route. The only drawback is that this service is seasonal and depends on sea conditions.
