A village to live

Discover Positano strolling through the heart of the village

There's a small village along the Amalfi Coast where time seems to slow down, where the colours glow brighter than anywhere else and where every alley tells a love story. Positano isn't just a destination, it's an experience that wraps around your senses and enchants the soul.

Whether you look at it from the sea or from the mountains, what stands out is the cascade of pastel-coloured houses sliding down the slope until they bathe in the turquoise waters of the coast.

Strolling through its cobbled lanes or along the sandy beaches, you can still breathe the soul of a village that has seen fishermen, artists, poets and travellers of every era pass through, all enchanted by its timeless beauty.

Positano isn't visited, it's lived — what are you waiting for to live it too!

Getting there

How to get to Positano.

Positano can be reached by car, bus and, of course, by ferry. Whether you arrive by air or by train to Naples and Salerno, the coast can be reached from there by bus, by renting a car or with a private transfer service.

For example, from Naples station you can reach Sorrento thanks to the Circumvesuviana line, then continue to Positano by bus. SITA buses reach the coast in about 40 minutes and the fare is very affordable.

Should you think of reaching Positano by car, it would undoubtedly be spectacular, but it isn't always recommended — the route is scenic but also demanding!

By car

  • From Naples it takes about 1h 30 min (via the A3 to Castellammare di Stabia + SS163).
  • From Rome it takes about 3h 30 min (via the A1 + A3).

Of course, watch out for the narrow, busy roads in summer; parking is also difficult and expensive (up to €10/h in garages).

By train + bus

From Naples station, reach Sorrento on the Circumvesuviana, then continue to Positano on SITA buses: about 40 minutes and a very affordable fare.

A Rider worthy of the name will surely choose the fastest — but also the most beautiful — option. The most scenic and relaxing way is by ferry.

The best way

Positano by ferry

Connections are seasonal, from April to October — for example:

  • From Naples to Positano in 1h 15 min
  • From Sorrento to Positano in 30 min
  • From Salerno to Positano in 1h

The main ports to board from are:

  • From Naples, Molo Beverello with fast hydrofoils to Positano.
  • From Sorrento, Marina Piccola with ferries every 30-60 min.
  • From Salerno, Molo Manfredi or Piazza della Concordia by ferry.

How much time you need

Is one day enough to visit Positano?

Stairway in Positano with local shops and colourful houses along the Amalfi Coast

Yes, but only if everything is perfectly organised.

At first glance Positano may seem small and easy to visit, but once you arrive the reality is very different. The town develops vertically along the cliff, among stairs, narrow alleys and limited access that, especially in high season, can become very crowded.

Getting around takes more time than you'd imagine: what look like short distances on the map turn into routes made of climbs and descents, passages through crowded alleys and constant changes of pace.

Even the simplest activities — reaching the beach, finding a restaurant or moving between viewpoints — require organisation and good time management.

Facing the day without a plan can easily turn into a tiring experience where, instead of enjoying Positano, you risk feeling overwhelmed or missing its most authentic corners.

With a well-thought-out itinerary, however, everything changes: one day becomes not only enough but also rewarding, letting you experience Positano at the right pace, stress-free and truly savouring its unique atmosphere.

Good to know

Practical tips & FAQ for visiting Positano.

Is Positano worth visiting?

Absolutely yes. Often called the "vertical town", Positano is the most iconic and photographed destination on the Amalfi Coast. Its colourful houses clinging to the cliff, its high-fashion boutiques (Moda Positano) and its world-famous views make it a must. Even if you don't stay overnight, a visit is essential to soak up the glamour, the romantic atmosphere and the breathtaking view over the Li Galli islands.

What's the best way to get to Positano?

It depends on your starting point, but reaching Positano often requires a combination of transport. There's no direct connection: the main reference point is Naples, from which you can continue by private car, bus or by sea. In the warmer months, sea connections are generally the most convenient and scenic option, as they let you avoid the traffic on the coastal road.

Is Positano easy to visit on foot?

Not entirely. Positano is a village built vertically along the cliff, and getting around means tackling climbs, descents and numerous stairs. What looks close on the map actually takes time and a certain physical effort.

Is it worth arriving in Positano by car?

In most cases, no. The coastal road is narrow, winding and often congested, especially in high season. Parking is limited, expensive and often reserved for residents or properties. If you arrive by car, it's best to leave it in a car park and continue on foot.

How do you get around Positano once you arrive?

The main way to get around is on foot. Most of the town is made up of alleys and stairs connecting the different areas. For longer distances you can use local buses or taxis, but it's always best to plan ahead.

Are there a lot of stairs in Positano?

Yes, and it's an integral part of the experience. Reaching the beach, the port or moving between the different areas of town often means tackling numerous stairs. Even arriving by sea, you need to climb to reach the centre of the village. Comfortable shoes are essential.

What's the best time to visit Positano?

The best months are spring and early autumn, when the weather is pleasant and the crowds more manageable. During summer, Positano is very crowded, especially in the middle of the day, and this can affect the overall experience.

Is one day enough to visit Positano?

Yes, but only with good organisation. Without a clear itinerary, getting around can take longer than expected and make the day more tiring. With proper planning, however, you can experience Positano at the right pace even in a single day.

Do you need to book restaurants in advance?

Yes, especially in high season. Restaurants with sea views or in central locations are very popular, particularly at lunch and at sunset. Booking ahead lets you avoid waits and manage your time better.

How should you dress to visit Positano?

Comfortable clothing and suitable shoes are essential. You walk a lot, often on uneven surfaces and stairs. In summer, light clothing, sun protection and water are recommended.

Is Positano family-friendly?

Positano is wonderful for families, but it does require a bit of planning. It's famous for its "scalinatella" (thousands of steps), which can be challenging with a stroller. That said, children will love the main beach (Spiaggia Grande) and the artisan gelato shops. If you're travelling with small children, the advice is to use a baby carrier rather than a stroller and to arrive by sea or with a private transfer to avoid the stress of traffic and long uphill walks.

Can I combine more destinations with Positano in the same day?

Yes, it's absolutely possible and highly recommended. Thanks to its position, Positano pairs perfectly with Amalfi and Ravello for the classic Coast tour. Alternatively, many travellers choose to combine a morning visit to the ruins of Pompeii with an afternoon of relaxation in Positano. To make the most of the day and avoid the logistical stress of buses and parking, booking a private tour by car or boat is the most efficient way to see two or three gems in a single trip.
