There isn't really one single best time — it depends on the kind of trip you're after — but generally spring and early autumn are ideal. Here's why:
Ideal temperatures
Neither too hot nor too cold, spring temperatures let you explore the coast without suffering the excessive heat.

Spring turns the coast into a riot of colour, with bougainvillea adorning houses and gardens.
Fewer crowds
Compared with the summer months there are fewer tourists, so it's easier to find space on the beaches and in restaurants.

How to reach Sorrento
Reaching Sorrento is fairly simple thanks to its strategic position on the Sorrento Peninsula. Here are the main transport options, with the pros and cons of each.
By train
The Circumvesuviana service runs from Naples and takes about 1h 10min; it's cheap, usually around €4 per person. It's certainly the most economical option, with frequent departures (roughly every 30 minutes) that take you straight into central Sorrento. However, the trains are often crowded, especially in summer, not very comfortable and without air conditioning — plus possible delays. I'd only recommend it for travellers on a tight budget who aren't in a hurry.
By car
From Naples or Salerno the route is very simple via the A3 Naples–Salerno motorway → Castellammare exit → SS145 to Sorrento (about 1h 15min). By car you get maximum freedom over timing and stops and the chance to explore the Amalfi Coast independently, but bear in mind the roads are narrow and busy, especially in summer, parking is hard to find and expensive (up to €30/day), and there are ZTLs (limited-traffic zones) in central Sorrento.
A true Rider picks the fastest option — but also the most beautiful. The most scenic and relaxing way to reach Sorrento is by sea.
Sorrento by hydrofoil or ferry
From Naples, at Molo Beverello, you reach the port of Sorrento in about 40 minutes. In short:
